FAQS

What is the seal between the syringe's plunger and the barrel?
What is the metal luer-lock tip made of?
Are these syringes gas tight?

What is the seal between the syringe's plunger and the barrel? No sealing material is used between the plunger and barrel interface. The interface is ground-glass. When dry the surface of the ground-glass appears frosted. When wetted the interface turns clear.

What is the metal luer-lock tip made of? The metal luer-lock tip is constructed of chrome-plated brass. We do not offer stainless steel luer-lock tips. On request we can remove the metal tip leaving an all-glass syringe. The remaining glass tip will have approximate dimensions of 9 mm outside diameter, 7 mm height, and 3 mm bore.

Are these syringes gas tight? Because there is no seal such as in a disposable syringe or teflon-tip seal like in a gas-tight syringe, the first response to this question is no. However, when considering this question, one must take into account holding time and allowable leakage. This line of syringes is not 100% gas tight since the seal is essentially ground-glass on ground-glass. Fortunately it is possible to remarkedly improve its sealing ability by applying vacuum grease or an acceptable wetting agent (water, oil) to the ground-glass area. Depending upon your application or sampling requirements, you may be able to obtain quite satisfactory performance.
